Major Projects

BLTRadio.com (Better Living Through Radio)

Thesis project, in partnership with Kristin Kramer, ITP, 1997. Kristin and I created one of the first student-run Real Audio radio stations on the Internet. BLTRadio broadcast an eclectic mix of music and public affairs programming 3 days a week, 8 hours per day, for approximately 18 months. My responsibilities included original design and layout work, HTML production, scheduling of DJs, running the RealAudio encoder, cataloguing archives and assisting with engineering of panel shows.

The station was an experiment in broadcasting, community space on the Web, and interactivity. Special webcast events included gurl.com radio shows and live chat and panel discussion during the 'coming out' episode of the TV show 'Ellen'. (Note: the BLTRadio.com domain was retired, and is now owned by a barbecue restaurant.)

Technology/Media: Real Server software for Win NT, scrounged/donated mixer & turntables & CD player, BBEdit, Adobe PhotoShop, shareware PERL bulletin board & chat on an Apache Web server, lots of awesome volunteer DJs.

Mister Lifto's Balls of Fury!

Interactive Sculpture created in partnership with Fred Kahl, ITP 1997. Fred and I combined out final projects for the electronics/programming class called Physical Computing, for display in the annual ITP Spring Show.

Fred's portion consisted of a remotely controlled wireframe robot (Mister Lifto), elevator, and remotely activated carnival rides built with antique Erector sets. Fred's devices started things off, and eventually sent a marble down a chute to my part of the piece.

My portion was a Rube Goldberg-like contraption that existed partly in the real world, and partly in the virtual world of the computer screen. A marble would roll around and down assorted tracks, and then 'enter' the computer monitor and go through various weird contraptions onscreen, and then would 'exit' the screen, triggering the marble outside the monitor to continue it's journey. The entire piece was choreographed to give the illusion that a single marble was going through all the tracks and paths, both onscreen and off.

Technology/Media: Macromedia Director, Adobe PhotoShop, BASIC Stamp Microcontroller connected to Mac PowerPC via serial port, assorted solenoid switches & tubes & wires & toys & gadgets.

Billow

Billow was developed by myself and 4 other students (John Wardzala, Emily Weil, Jessica Millstone and Teri Rueb) for a class entitled 'Simulation and Presentation' at ITP. It was a prototype system to enable seriously ill children in hospital isolation to interact and play with other kids, via a virtual onscreen world and a squishable input device.

Over the course of two semesters we investigated the needs of a specific user group, researched technology and materials, tested out mockups and prototypes, and presented Billow at the 1996 Interval Research Center Design Competition, in Palo Alto, CA. Billow was also presented by John, Teri, and Jessica at CHI in 1997.

Technology/Media: Macromedia Director, Adobe PhotoShop, Adobe Premiere, Hi-8 video, paper & pencils & modelling clay & assorted gadgetry, lots of volunteers for research & testing.

Chris or Kristin?

This was an experimental CD-rom, done in partnership with Kristin Kramer as our final project for a Director Programming class, ITP, 1996.

The piece was a weird interactive dreamscape, intended for exploration and entertainment. It combined bizzare animations, odd video and audio pieces, and strange virtual places, along assorted themes including driving, UFOs, darkness, and grafitti. (No demos available due to limitations of QuickTime within Shockwave.)

Technology/Media: Macromedia Director, Adobe PhotoShop, Avid VideoShop, assorted toys & paper source materials, various found audio materials.
